Dougie enjoyed a varied and successful 32 year career in the Services during which he spent considerable time in command appointments around the world. He specialised in mountain and arctic warfare, spending many winter seasons in the extremely challenging environment of North Norway. He subsequently worked extensively as a senior commander in counter-terrorist operations, and later led a team of intelligence analysts in Whitehall. In this capacity he was closely involved with a variety of national and international agencies dealing with the most senior level of Crisis Management. He is an accomplished mountaineer, leading expeditions to Manaslu and Mount Everest’s West Ridge. He was also President of the board selecting officer recruits for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
He was a principal consultant with an emergency management consultancy for 7 years and took the lead for that company in command and control, practical leadership, team building and stress management.
In March 1999 he set up his own consultancy Berwicks and he is the principal in delivering a wide range of emergency training and consultancy to various companies at many different levels. He has played a key part in helping to establish an integrated approach to emergency management and the command and control structures now common-place in the UK Nuclear Industry. He has also had extensive experience in emergency planning and training with other major hazard industries.
