On graduating with a Physics degree in 1977 he was commissioned into the Royal Air Force as an engineer and subsequently gained a second degree in Advanced Aero-Systems Engineering. His varied service of 29 years encompassed both aircraft and ground systems specialist roles through to senior staff appointments.
Practical engineering commands included a Rapier short-range air defence missile squadron in Germany and a UK-based Jaguar aircraft squadron. These tours involved operational detachments to the Falkland Islands, the Gulf and Turkey.
He has held staff appointments in electronic warfare support, surface-to-air weapons systems development, a major Service-wide study into future manpower structures, aircraft engineering and manpower policy support to the Royal Saudi Air Force, and as directing staff for the Army Staff Course.
In 1998 he assumed command of the Training Wing at Locking responsible for ground communications-electronic training there, and for overseeing its migration to Cosford the following year. On relocation his command was expanded to include delivery of the bulk of aeronautical and ground technical trades training. Thereafter he was nominated as the Royal Air Force lead for the project definition phase of the Defence Training Review addressing the formation of a Defence School of Aeronautical Engineering.
Before completing his service in 2006 he commanded a division at the Defence Academy responsible for the development of information management and exploitation training policy, and was chair of the Defence working group that defined future competencies to support networked decision making.
In addition to being a Berwicks associate Trevor spends his winters as a ski instructor in Switzerland and his summers teaching offshore sailing around the glorious Pembrokeshire coast and beyond. When not engaged in various adventurous pursuits he has been known to swing a golf club, albeit inconsistently.
